The glaciers around Engelberg

For the fourth time this year, interested people from near and far will embark on a "glacier hike" with the Sustainability Group Engelberg (SGE) and with Christoph Bissig, former head of slope and rescue operations.

Every year we have the opportunity to observe various glaciers around Engelberg and learn more about their history and condition. Christoph worked on the Titlis for over 30 years – he knows the mountains and glaciers in the valley like no other.

In 2022, we hiked together from Engelberg to Trübsee; a year later, Christoph took us to Fürenalp to view the glaciers "behind the Titlis"; last year, Christoph led us to the foot of the Firnalpeli Glacier, which was removed from the official glacier register due to its shrinking size...

This year's motto is "every drop counts" ...

This statement is often found in connection with glacial retreat and the loss of glaciers. We will also discuss the topic of melting droplets in the rock during the hike.

We are also interested in examining the issue of glacial retreat from a tourism perspective. Our grandfathers, for example, harvested ice to cool drinks and food. Our grandchildren will live to see the last glacier in the Engelberg Valley disappear. So much for eternal ice... "what a misconception!"

If these topics and stories interest you, we look forward to your registration for the hike to

Glacier observation on September 28th.
